Biden Touts ‘Historic Progress’ in New Jobs Report: ‘Pulling Our Economy Out of the Worst Crisis in 100 Years’

While the Independence Day barbecues celebrating the end of Covid-19 may not come off as the White House intended, there is reason to celebrate this weekend. President Joe Biden took a victory lap based on new and encouraging jobs report that came out on the eve of the holiday Fourth of July weekend.

A new jobs report revealed that non-farm payrolls increased by 850,000 in June versus the estimate for 706,000, though the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 5.9% versus the 5.6% estimate.

“As we’ve prepared to celebrate Independence Day, today’s job news brought us something else to celebrate,” Biden proclaimed during a Friday morning press conference.  “This morning we learned that in June, our economy created 850,000 jobs. 850,000 jobs. Wages went up for American workers.”

“Since I took office, our recovery has created an average $600,000,” Biden misspoke, catching himself with “I wish that was 600,000 jobs paid $600,000 a year. But 600,000 jobs per month. We’ve created over 3 million jobs since I took office.”

For context, Biden added, “And more jobs than have ever been created in the first five months of a presidency in history thanks to the work of the entire team.”

“This is historic progress,” the president continued. “Pulling our economy out of the worst crisis in 100 years, driven in part by our dramatic progress in vaccinating our nation and beating back the pandemic, as well as other elements of the American rescue plan.”
