Bondi Beach Hero Recounts the Stunning Moment He Grabbed Shooter’s Gun

The man who heroically disarmed one of the gunmen during the savage terror attack on Australia’s Bondi Beach recounted the moment he chose to put his own life at risk to save others.

Ahmed al Ahmed, a tobacco shop owner from Sydney, told CBS News that he “didn’t worry about anything” except saving those around him.

“My target was just to take the gun from him, and to stop him from killing a human being’s life and not killing innocent people,” he said. “I know I saved lots, but I feel sorry for the lost.”

Ahmed’s stunning heroism gained widespread attention after dash cam footage showed him jumping from behind a parked car onto one of the gunmen’s backs, eventually wrenching the gun from the assailant’s hands.

“I jumped on his back, hit him. I hold him with my right hand and start saying a word, you know, like to warn him, drop your gun, stop doing what you’re doing, and it’s come all in fast,” al Ahmed said.

He continued:

And emotionally, I’m doing something, which is I feel something, a power in my body, my brain … I don’t want to see people killed in front of me, I don’t want to hear his gun, I don’t want to see people screaming and begging, asking for help, and that’s my soul asking me to do that. Everything in my heart, in my brain, everything, it’s worked just to manage to save the peoples’ life.

Al Ahmed’s act of bravery was praised by many, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who lauded his act of service in a visit to the hospital in which al Ahmed was being treated for injuries he sustained during the attack.

“Your heart is strong, your courage is inspiring,” Albanese said. “He was trying to get a cup of coffee, simple as that, and found himself at a moment where people were being shot in front of him. He decided to take action, and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians. He is a very humble man.”

The father and son behind the horrific attack, identified as Sajid and Naveed Akram, killed 15 people at the Hanukkah celebration taking place on the beach. The men also threw homemade bombs into the crowd, police said, although none of the devices detonated.

Among those killed in the attack were a 10-year-old child and an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who was shot dead while trying to protect his wife.
