Corporation for Public Broadcasting to Shut Down After Trump Administration Yanks Funding

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will be shuttered after the Trump administration moved to pull its funding.

CPB, which funds PBS and NPR, announced on Friday that it would “wind down” operations after its funding was slashed for the first time in over 50 years.

“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison said in a statement Friday. “CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

The cuts to CPB were approved by Congress earlier this month as part of President Donald Trump’s $9 billion rescissions package, which slashed foreign aid and public broadcasting funds.

CPB employees were told Friday that the majority of the staff positions will be eliminated effective Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year, according to the corporation.

The development should come as welcome news to the president, who cheered the recissions package’s approval in a Truth Social post on July 18.

HOUSE APPROVES NINE BILLION DOLLAR CUTS PACKAGE, INCLUDING ATROCIOUS NPR AND PUBLIC BROADCASTING, WHERE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR WERE WASTED. REPUBLICANS HAVE TRIED DOING THIS FOR 40 YEARS, AND FAILED….BUT NO MORE. THIS IS BIG!!!

The CPB release did not elaborate on the number of job cuts, or the future of NPR and PBS, which have each received some half a billion dollars in public money since their inception in 1967.
