Judge Orders Trump to Pay $354 Million and Bars Him From Running Company For Three Years
Judge Arthur Engoron ruled Friday that former President Donald Trump must pay $354 million in damages. Additional fines were levied on Trump’s adult sons and company executives.
The 92-page decision also ordered Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump to each pay $4 million in damages, while ex-Trump Org. chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg was ordered to pay $1 million.
Engoron also barred Trump from serving as a corporate officer or a director of a company in the state of New York for three years — his sons received a two-year ban. There was one silver lining in the ruling for the Trumps: the judge did not issue an order revoking the Trump Org’s certificate to do business, which has commonly been referred to as the “corporate death penalty.”
Engoron issued a partial summary judgment in the case last September, finding Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, had committed fraud. The case was brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) who asked that Trump and his adult sons be barred from doing business in New York and repay some $370 million in profits.
The trial ended in mid-January with Engoron weighing both the damages Trump would be required to pay regarding the fraud liability and six other outstanding allegations from James, including falsifying business records, insurance fraud, and conspiracy claims.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
