Partial Human Remains Reportedly Found Near Backpack Believed to Belong to Brian Laundrie

Partial human remains were found near a backpack on Wednesday in a Florida nature reserve that is believed to belong to Brian Laundrie, who has been on the run since being wanted by law enforcement in connection with the death of his fiancée, 22-year-old Gaby Petito, whose remains were found and whose death has been ruled a homicide.

Laundrie is a person of interest in Petito’s death and is wanted for using an unknown person’s Capital One card and personal identification number to withdraw more than $1,000 between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. Petito had already been missing.

According to NBC News:

Human remains were found in the same area where personal belongings were found of Brian Laundrie, Gabby Petito’s fiancé who’s been missing for over a month, officials said Wednesday.

A senior law enforcement official says what appears to be partial human remains have been found in the Carlton Reserve in a location that was previously under water. There is no confirmation the remains belong to Laundrie.

The remains were found near a backpack, according to this source, which may be consistent with the type of items Laundrie may have had in his possession.

Laundrie’s parents directed FBI agents and North Port police to the location where “some articles belonging to Brian were found,” according to a statement by Laundrie attorney Steven Bertolino.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie went to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park this morning to search for Brian,” Bertolino said.

“The FBI and NPPD were informed last night of Brian’s parents’ intentions and they met Chris and Roberta there this morning. After a brief search off a trail that Brian frequented some articles belonging to Brian were found. As of now law enforcement is conducting a more thorough investigation of that area.”

The local medical examiner and a K9 unit trained to find human remains were called to the scene, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said.

The entrance to Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park is about five miles north of the Laundrie family home.
