Doocy Presses Psaki on Harris Not Visiting Border: ‘Did Somebody Here Decide it Would Not be Helpful for Her to Go?’
Fox News’ Peter Doocy pressed White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday over whether there was any plan for Vice President Kamala Harris to visit the border with Mexico.
“When the vice president is asked if she has plans to visit the border, she says we’ve been to the border, even though she has not, as vice president,” Doocy noted at an afternoon White House press conference.
“Well, as the vice president, she does speak for the actions of the people in the administration,” Psaki replied, saying her “assignment” had been to work with foreign leaders.
Doocy followed up, “As we understand it … her main focus is to try and address the root causes of migration. Did somebody decide here that it would not be helpful for her to go to the border and talk to people who just migrated here?”
“I think that at some point, she may go to the border,” Psaki said, before reiterating that Harris was speaking with foreign leaders.
Doocy followed up once more, noting that Harris described going to the border as a “grand gesture,” and asked Psaki to explain the reasoning for that assertion. Psaki once again demurred, saying that Harris’ focus was on meeting foreign officials.
The exchange came after an interview with Harris by NBC’s Lester Holt in which Holt asked why Harris hadn’t visited the border. Harris laughed in response to the question and said she didn’t “understand the point” he was making.
