Jonah Goldberg Declares ‘Muslim Version of AOC’ Zohran Mamdani’s Victory Is ‘Fantastic’ for Trump: Democrats Have a ‘Death Wish’
Jonah Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Dispatch and a CNN contributor, argued that Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary is “fantastic news for the Trump administration” in the latest episode of The Dispatch’s flagship podcast.
Goldberg, who has condemned the “creepy, anti-Muslim rhetoric” about Mamdani coming from some on the Right, noted that on October 8, 2023, the day after Hamas launched a brutal terrorist attack on civilians in southern Israel, Mamdani “put out a statement condemning Israel for its attack on Gaza with no mention of the attack on Israel — that’s the kind of guy he is.”
He continued:
He is a campus radical, occupier-type who’s charming and has a good Instagram account who had profoundly stupid ideas about economics, and no experience on how to run a government, or an administration. And it looks liked got a non-trivial, like 50-50 chance of being the next mayor of New York City, and that I think will be disastrous for New York City.
And also, I should point out to our friends who are more on the sort of Bulwark-y side of anti-Trump stuff: This is fantastic news for the Trump administration, that they will have a sort of Muslim version of AOC, who’s a defund the police guy, and pro, you know, Palestin, pro-Gaza, pro-Hamas demonstrator type who wants socialist grocery stores, and free public transportation, and rent freezes, and all of these things. Thy will have him as a strawman, as a human strawman, as a whipping boy, as a poster boy.
It is like the Democratic Party has a death wish, and that also, like, New York City has a death wish.
In the October 8 post referenced by Goldberg, Mamdani wrote, “I mourn the hundreds of people killed across Israel and Palestine in the last 36 hours. [Benjamin] Netanyahu’s declaration of war, the Israeli government’s decision to cut electricity from Gaza, and Knesset members calling for another Nakba will undoubtedly lead to more violence and suffering in the days and weeks to come. The path toward a just and lasting piece can only begin by ending the occupation and dismantling apartheid.”
