Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) refused to answer questions on Tuesday about his controversial X posts making light of the targeted shooting of lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota over the weekend.

NBC News’ Brennan Leach confronted Lee at the Capitol on Tuesday where his staff tried blocking cameras at one point while Lee offered silence in response to every question about his posts.

“Can you tell us about your conversation with Sen. Smith?” Leach asked, referring to Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) saying this week that she confronted Lee about his “cruel” posts.

In one post, Lee wrote, “This is what happens when Marxists don’t get their way.” He included an image of shooting suspect Vance Boelter, who is in police custody after a massive manhunt over the weekend.

Boelter is suspected of posing as a police officer to gain entry into the homes of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman. Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were shot and killed in their home, while Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were shot and treated for their gunshot wounds.

In another controversial post, Lee wrote, “Nightmare on Waltz Street,” likely referring to Boelter serving on a 2019 advisory committee under Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s administration.

“Do you regret your tweet?” Leach asked Lee. “Do you stand by the post you made on X?”

As Leach asked Lee whether the posts were brought up in a meeting he just attended, a staffer tried blocking the camera.

“What did you think of the meeting you just came from?” Leach asked, again receiving silence as Lee made his way to his car.

As of this writing, both of Lee’s Sunday tweets remain on his profile.
