Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly used his son’s wedding as part of an elaborate deception to mask preparations for a surprise attack on Iran’s nuclear and military leadership — but unbeknownst to his son and his own wife, he was deliberately planning to cancel and postpone it.
The attack operation, dubbed “Red Wedding” after the iconic Game of Thrones episode, targeted Iran’s top brass. It was the opening salvo in a 12-day Israeli campaign intended to decimate Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure and disrupt its military command structure.
According to a stunning revelation in the Wall Street Journal on Friday, to maintain the element of surprise, Netanyahu’s office publicly announced he would be off duty for a long weekend and attending his son Avner’s wedding on June 16 in a strategic sleight of hand.
“None of the attendees — including Avner or Netanyahu’s wife, Sarah — knew the prime minister was planning to delay the wedding,” journalist Dov Lieber wrote.
The ruse extended to diplomatic misdirection, with Israeli officials also leaking reports of a supposed rift between Netanyahu and President Donald Trump, who publicly stated just hours before the assault: “We remain committed to a Diplomatic Resolution to the Iran Nuclear Issue!”
While Israel’s jets were already en route, Iran’s leadership reportedly remained convinced that U.S. participation would be a prerequisite for any Israeli action – precisely the illusion Israeli planners aimed to sustain. According to the Journal, one official noted that the goal was to convince Tehran that Israel wouldn’t proceed to attack “without U.S. authorization and participation.”
That deception proved fatal for Iran’s military elite. In a precision strike, Israeli missiles killed Iran’s top air force commanders just as they gathered in a single location. Simultaneously, a parallel strike, Operation Narnia, took out nine of Iran’s leading nuclear scientists in their homes.
The outlet reported that the surprise and speed of the assault shocked even veteran Israeli planners.
“When we started to plan this thing in detail, it was very difficult to know that this would work,” said Israeli Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk, described as a key architect of the operation.
