Pfizer’s CEO Dr. Albert Bourla picked an opportune moment to praise President Donald Trump’s “profound” handling of the 2020 Covid-19 vaccine rollout during his first administration, as the president’s current administration cuts $500 million in mRNA projects.

In a statement issued via the company website on Wednesday, Bourla said: “The success of Operation Warp Speed (OWS) and U.S. development of mRNA vaccines is a profound public health achievement. Under President Trump’s leadership, American innovation led the world, helping prevent economic collapse and saving more than 14 million lives globally. Operation Warp Speed restored consumer confidence, saved over $1 trillion in health care costs due to reductions in serious illness and avoidance of hospitalizations, and rapidly scaled up domestic production.”

He added: “This American leadership also delivered a new platform that may drive significant innovation in cancer research. Such an accomplishment would typically be worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, given its significant impact.”

The praise from Pfizer comes against a backdrop of political upheaval at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

CDC Director Susan Monarez was abruptly forced out last week after clashing with Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. over plans to pull approvals for certain Covid shots. Monarez, who insists she never resigned, said she was “targeted” for refusing to “rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives.”

Meanwhile, on the same day Bourla released his statement, more than 1,000 current and former HHS staff signed a letter calling for Kennedy to resign and days after nine ex-CDC directors joined forces to warn Kennedy’s policies are “endangering every American’s health.”
