Angry constituents sent a Republican lawmaker in Alabama fleeing out the back door of his own town hall in what has become the latest congressional event to go off the rails in recent months.
The drama began after Rep. Barry Moore’s (R-AL) staffer announced that the congressman would take one last question on the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts, according to NBC News.
One woman can be heard asking, “Why aren’t people getting due process?” as another constituent recorded the event.
“Due process for a citizen and non-citizen are different,” Moore answered as the room erupted in chaos.
“False! False! Lies!” one man could be heard shouting.
The crowd then erupted into a chorus of “Shame! Shame!” as Moore and his staff headed for the back door.
Advocacy group Indivisible Baldwin County captured the entire 40-minute event in Daphne, a suburb of Mobile, AL, that they posted to Facebook.
According to the Daily Beast, “The question about due process proved to be the tipping point, but Moore had been grilled all night in Baldwin County, an area where Donald Trump won 78.4 percent of the vote in the 2024 presidential election.”
“In an interview on Thursday on The Dale Jackson Show, a conservative Alabama podcast and radio program, Moore denied slipping out the back,” the Beast added.
“We left like any other event,” he said. “I think we tried to engage and answer questions, but unfortunately, it got hijacked.”
The report continued:
Moore added that he was “so calm” throughout the event and insisted he “doesn’t mind facing the heat head on.” He attributed the disruptions to “some of the same bad actors,” who he said he had seen at other appearances.
Moore, who has been in office since 2020, is running to replace Sen. Tommy Tuberville in the Senate. Tuberville announced in May that he would leave the Senate to campaign for Alabama’s next governor.
Other Republicans facing hostile town halls in the past month include Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO), Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE).
