Hours after President Donald Trump’s shocking Truth Social post attacking Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia suggested that Trump was simply being “emotional.”
Late Sunday night, Trump responded to Russia’s latest attack on Ukraine with a scathing post directed as Putin. He called his Russian counterpart “crazy” and accused him of “needlessly killing a lot of people.” At the end of his post, Trump warned that Putin’s actions would lead to the “downfall of Russia.”
The post appeared to signify a major turning point in the relationship between Trump and Putin. While Trump has repeatedly called for an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, he often did so while framing Ukraine as the aggressor. On Sunday night, however, Trump placed the blame squarely on Putin.
In a Monday morning report from Reuters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested that Trump had succumbed to “emotional overload.” The report continued:
“We are really grateful to the Americans and to President Trump personally for their assistance in organising and launching this negotiation process,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the Trump remarks about Putin.
“Of course, at the same time, this is a very crucial moment, which is associated, of course, with the emotional overload of everyone absolutely and with emotional reactions.”
