Trump Attacks Fed Chair Powell as He Heads to Texas, Claims America Was ‘Dead’ a Year Ago

President Donald Trump has once again demanded lower interest rates with a blistering new attack on Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

As he fielded questions from reporters outside Marine One on Friday, Trump was asked whether he intends to fire Powell, who was been repeatedly harangued by the White House for months.

“No, I think [Powell] is doing a terrible job,” Trump said. “I think — I think we should be three points lower interest rate. He is costing our country a lot of money. We should be No. 1 one and we’re not, and that’s because of Jerome Powell, in terms of interest.”

He went on: “We are number one in the world. Look, I’ll tell you a little simple language: One year ago, our country was a dead country. We were going nowhere except down. We were the laughingstock all over the world. And now, we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world. We’re No. 1 one everyone, anywhere in the world. All that’s all they’re talking about is our country. One year ago, it was a dead country. Now the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

Trump’s remarks came as he and First Lady Melania Trump headed to Texas, where he will survey the damage from the deadly floods in Kerrville — including a girls’ summer camp, where 27 kids and counselors were killed.

Last month, Trump posted a scathing note he had written to Powell that demanded the Fed chief lower interest rates — “by a lot!”

The letter, presented to reporters and read aloud to reporters by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on June 30, was written over a list of the lowest bank rates of world nations, where the U.S. ranks No. 35 with 4.5 percent.
