Trump Hits False Politico Attack At Prayer Breakfast — Hours After His Own Press Secretary Debunked It

President Donald Trump dropped a false attack on Politico into a prayer breakfast speech — less than 24 hours after his own press secretary debunked it from the podium.

Trump and his MAGA followers have been pushing the false claim that Politico and other outlets were being “funded” by USAID — a claim that Trump White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt soft-corrected when RSBN host Brian Glenn brought it up at Wednesday’s White House press briefing, pointing out the money was for subscriptions and not direct “funding”:

BRIAN GLENN: USAID has gotten a lot of attention in the last couple of days with some of these bizarre things that we, the taxpayers, have been funding. Now, it looks like there are a couple of media outlets that have been dragged into this conversation as far as USAID. Will the president have any comment on that?

KAROLINE LEAVITT: So upon coming out here to the briefing room, I was made aware of the funding from USAID to media outlets, including Politico, who I know has a seat in this room. And I can confirm that the more than 8 million taxpayer dollars that have gone to essentially subsidizing subscriptions to Politico on the American taxpayers dime will no longer be happening.

But that didn’t stop Trump from pressing the attack. On Thursday morning, Trump gave remarks at a pair of National Prayer Breakfast events — one at Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol and another in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton.

During the latter speech, Trump claimed to have “ended woke” — and presented the false claim that Leavitt debunked as evidence of this:

But we I don’t know if you’ve been watching, but we got rid of woke over the last two weeks. Woke is gonzo.

Despite the other side stealing hundreds of millions of dollars to promote woke. Did you see what happened yesterday where they found over hundreds of millions of dollars of money was fraudulently given to newspapers? And I guess Politico?

I don’t know. They’re here. Good. I hope you’re enjoying your breakfast.(LAUGHTER) No, They gave money to do all this– out of out of US Aid. Right. US AID. It came out hundreds of. Just tremendous amounts of money. Had nothing to do with anything. This is a terrible thing that was experienced. But we’re catching ’em left and right.
