President Donald Trump released a statement on Saturday in response to two Minnesota lawmakers being shot by a suspect authorities say was impersonating a police officer.

“I’ve been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers,” the president wrote in a statement. “Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said she is closely monitoring the situation.

“I am closely monitoring developments in Minnesota after what appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. The FBI is on the ground investigating this case alongside state and local partners,” she wrote. “This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also posted a statement saying the FBI is “on the ground” and working with local law enforcement while a manhunt is underway.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) reported at a Saturday press conference that Democratic State Sen. John Hoffman of Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park were shot in what appears to be “politically motivated” attacks. Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were killed, while Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, are being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. They are currently in stable condition.

Police said the suspect, who is still at large as of Saturday morning, was impersonating a police officer during the shootings. The suspect had a manifesto with the names of other officials listed and exchanged gunfire with police while fleeing Hortman’s home.

Authorities told residents to only answer the door for police if they are in pairs as the suspect could still be impersonating law enforcement. Brooklyn Park Police issued a shelter-in-place alert for a 3-mile radius of the Edinburgh Golf Course early on Saturday.

This is a breaking story and has been updated.
