Trump Vows Aide to Palestinians As Axios Reports Israel Ready to ‘Flatten’ Gaza: ‘We Are Going to Help’
President Donald Trump vowed to “help the people of Gaza” on Monday while taking one last question at a press event in the Oval Office.
After Trump wrapped up his remarks and took a few questions, a reporter shouted a final question at Trump that was inaudible over the sound in the Oval office.
The president returned to the microphone and answered, “We’re going to help the people of Gaza get some food. People are starving, and we’re going to help them get some food. A lot of people are making it very, very bad.”
“What you — if you look, Hamas is making it impossible because they’re taking everything that’s brought in. But we’re gonna help the people of Gaza because they are being treated very badly by Hamas. Thank you very much,” Trump said as he then exited the room.
The moment was particularly notable as the question was asked amid a flurry of reports that Israel is planning to “occupy” and “flatten” Gaza if a deal is not reached anytime soon.
Axios ran a headline just before the question was asked that read, “Israel plans to occupy and flatten all of Gaza if no deal by Trump’s trip.”
“Israel has set President Trump’s visit to the Middle East next week as a deadline for a new hostage and ceasefire deal, with a massive ground operation to commence if no deal is reached, Israeli officials say,” reported Axios’s Barak Ravid.
Israel’s Cabinet ministers voted on the new plan early Monday morning, which would move hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from north to south in the Gaza Strip. The prospect of Israel returning to full military engagement in Gaza quickly raised concerns of an even more dire humanitarian crisis unfolding after Israel had already cut off food, water, and medical supplies from entering Gaza two months ago following a ceasefire breakdown.
