President Donald Trump’s Department of Transportation has seized control of Union Station in Washington, D.C., further exerting government control over the nation’s capital.
Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that the agency was taking over the station from Amtrak, saying it has “fallen into disrepair” in recent years.
“By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost,” Duffy said in a statement.
The announcement comes about two weeks after the Trump administration sent the National Guard into D.C. in a massive federal crime crackdown.
Since then, Trump has regularly touted the success of the action, which the president’s adversaries on the left have criticized as the creation of a “police state.”
