A new report reveals that White House staffers are furious with a top housing official who pitched President Donald Trump on the idea of 50-year mortgages, a controversial proposal that has been met with criticism on both sides.
Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte is facing scorn in the West Wing for selling the president on mortgages, which would take a half-century to pay off, according to Politico,
“The thing that became clear from this latest episode — if it wasn’t already clear — is that Bill Pulte doesn’t know the first fucking thing about how the mortgage markets operate,” said an unnamed source, identified by Politico as someone familiar with the situation. “After publicly humiliating the president with his moronic 50-year mortgage plan, it’s safe to assume that his days are numbered.”
White House staffers were said to have been “blindsided” by this proposal, and the fallout has not been pretty. Conservative allies, business leaders, and lawmakers have all come down harshly against the move.
“He just sold POTUS a bill of goods that wasn’t necessarily accurate,” an unnamed source told Politico. “He said ‘FDR did it, you can do it, it’s gonna be a big thing.’ But he didn’t tell him about all the unintended consequences.”
The 50-year mortgage plan has been pilloried by many on the left and the right — who don’t like the idea that homebuyers could be paying money for decades while accruing minimal equity.
“I do not like this idea,” Fox Business host Charles Payne said bluntly on Monday’s edition of America’s Newsroom on Fox News.
Pulte has gained notoriety in recent months for leading the crusade against several Trump political enemies including; Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and New York Attorney General Letitia James — publicly accusing them of mortgage fraud. To date, only James has been criminally charged, and even the strength of that case has been called into question by legal analysts.
But thanks to his pursuit of Trump’s political enemies, Pulte has evidently curried favor with the president — and only the president, according to a Politico source.
“Trump isn’t just Pulte’s biggest ally in the admin, he is perhaps his only friend,” an unnamed source told Politico. “During Trump 2.0, the last time anything got as much pushback as this was over the ‘Epstein Files.’ MAGA is furious.”
