The Wall Street Journal’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Yaroslav Trofimov, shared a stunning video Wednesday of Ukrainians ducking for cover as Russian airstrikes pummeled the city of Chernihiv.
Trofimov captioned the clip with a comment excoriating the House GOP holding up additional military aid to Ukraine, which would resupply the country’s missile defense systems and protect the civilian population from Russia’s indiscriminate attacks.
“Massive Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv. At least nine civilians declared dead and more under the rubble of buildings. Ukraine has essentially run out of air defenses because of the cutoff in American aid, and Russia is taking advantage of this strategic gift to level the country,” Trofimov wrote on X while sharing the clip.
AP reported on the strikes, “Firefighters work on a building that was partially destroyed after a Russian bombardment in Chernihiv, Ukraine, Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Three Russian missiles slammed into a downtown area of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv on Wednesday, hitting an eight-floor apartment building and killing at least 17 people, authorities said.”
The Democrat-led U.S. Senate passed a $95.3 billion foreign aid back in February that would give additional military assistance to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The House GOP has refused to bring the bill to the floor for a vote despite it having overwhelming bipartisan support. Former President Donald Trump and his MAGA allies have led the charge against the bill, which also threatens to tank Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has signaled he will hold separate votes on each aid package.
Trofimov noted later in the day that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the latest Russian attack by saying, “This wouldn’t have happened if Ukraine had enough air defenses and if the world were more decisive in opposing Russian terror.”
“Ukrainians watch as the U.S. and allies scrambled to protect Israeli skies but shrug off daily murder by Russian missiles,” Trofimov added, referring to the recent defense of Israel, which saw the interception of hundreds of drones and missiles from Iran.
