Don Lemon believes a Matt Lauer comeback could be in the cards despite the former news anchor seeing his career come to a crashing halt eight years ago amid sexual misconduct allegations.
On Wednesday’s Hollywood Raw podcast, Lemon said he became friends with Lauer after he was dismissed from NBC in 2017 and fans appear to still appreciate him.
“Whenever I see Matt out and about — or you know, if we go out to dinner, my husband and I go out to dinner with him and his fiancée, and people love him,” the former CNN anchor said.
Lauer was terminated from NBC in 2017 due to a “a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.” The network said they had reason to believe it was not an “isolated incident.”
Lemon said women love the man despite the accusations.
“Women love him! They’re like, ‘Man, oh my God, can I get a picture? I love you. I miss you on television.’ I think the public loves him. The public misses him,” he said.
Lemon could not explain why Lauer has not started a YouTube channel — as Lemon did after leaving CNN — but called him the perfect morning host.
“There are certain people who are on television where you feel like, well, “That’s exactly what they should be doing,” he said.
Lemon predicted a future where Lauer returns to the airwaves — thanks to President Donald Trump. He argued the “ratings would be great.”
“Maybe with this whole ‘Trump era,’ when, you know, cancelling is ‘over’ – I don’t know, maybe,” he said.
