Jon Stewart Revealed Uncertainty About Daily Show’s Future Just Hours Before Parent Company Axed Colbert

Jon Stewart revealed an uncertain future for The Daily Show just hours before CBS, which has the same parent company as Comedy Central, canceled Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.

On Thursday’s The Weekly Show, Stewart answered a fan question about Daily Show’s future with the pending merger between Paramount and Skydance. The $8 billion deal is awaiting FCC approval.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything from them. They haven’t called me and said, ‘Don’t get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.’ But let me tell you something, I’ve been kicked out of shittier establishments than that. We’ll land on our feet. I honestly don’t know,” Stewart said.

While their merger is pending approval, Paramount settled a lawsuit President Donald Trump filed over reporting by CBS. Fans of Colbert’s have been quick to tie his cancellation to that merger and settlement. The president celebrated the cancellation of vocal critic Colbert.

“I think we’re the only sort of life that exists on a current basis other than South Park, ” Stewart said. “But I’d like to think we bring enough value to the property, like if they’re looking at it as purely a real estate transaction, I think we bring a lot of value. But that may not be their consideration. I don’t know, they may sell the whole fucking place for parts.”

Stewart said he’s “proud” of the Daily Show staff and reiterated he does not know anything concrete about the show’s future. He referenced Trump making positive remarks about Skydance CEO David Ellison, but said he doesn’t know if “ideology” would play a part in the future of his show.

“We’ve all got a surmisal about who actually is owning it and what his ideology is, but ideology may not play a part,” he said.
