Columbia to Release Review of Rolling Stone‘s Questionable UVA Rape Story
Rolling Stone announced yesterday that they would soon publish the results of a review into how it botched the coverage of a woman’s alleged rape at the hands of a fraternity at the University of Virginia.
The bombshell story, initially published in November of 2014, quickly turned into a nightmare for the magazine as reporters quickly discovered numerous discrepancies in the report — most notably, the failure of Rolling Stone and the article’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, to independently verify the account of “Jackie,” the woman at the center of the piece.
Steve Coll, the dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, told The New York Times that the report focused mainly at the editorial process at Rolling Stone, with suggestions as to how the magazine would “have the freedom to move in any direction along the way that we believe would be germane and of public interest.”
Will Dana, Rolling Stone‘s managing editor, told the Times that he hadn’t read the report yet, but plans to publish it as soon as it is turned in.
