‘Our Microphones Win Again!’ Broadcaster Ecstatic as Hot Mic Catches Giants Manager’s Vulgar Tirade Against Umpire
San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin went on a tirade against home plate umpire Tony Randazzo that microphones picked up quite clearly.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, the Giants’ Logan Webb threw a 1-1 pitch that, while close to the strike zone, was accurately called a ball by Randazzo. Melvin had been displeased with the ump’s performance to that point, particularly after Randazzo punched out Giants catcher Patrick Bailey on a pitch that was clearly outside in the top of the fifth.
In response, Randazzo quickly tossed Melvin from the game.
“Oh we have an ejection!” Tigers play-by-play man Jason Benetti noted. “Bob Melvin is not happy with the plate umpire, Tony Randazzo.”
The FanDuel Sports Network obviously aired the exchange live, but the broadcast subsequently played the interaction again, apparently to make sure the manager’s beef could be heard loud and clear.
“It’s bullshit!” Melvin yelled. “You’re killing us! You’re fucking better than that!”
Randazzo and Melvin then began arguing over who started the “you’re better than that” talk.
“You’re not [better than that] tonight,” Melvin shouted. “That’s why I’m bitching.”
After their conversation ended, Benetti proudly declared, “Our microphones win again!”
San Francisco lost the game 3-1
The Tigers-Giants series has been an eventful one. On Monday, the Tigers’ Javier Baez took what he thought was ball four on a 3-2 pitch. Instead, home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi rang him up. Baez proceeded to blow a gasket.
