WATCH: New Mexico State Men’s Basketball Player Gets Ejected for Vicious Sucker Punch During Game
A player on New Mexico State University men’s basketball team was ejected Thursday after punching an opponent and sending him to the ground.
About halfway through the first half of New Mexico State’s game against Liberty, forward Robert Carpenter suddenly punched forward Shiloh Robinson as the two were under the rim trying to get a rebound. As Robinson dropped to the ground, the closest referee immediately blew the whistle. Carpenter was promptly ejected when a review of the play revealed a blatant punch.
Robinson remained on the ground for an extended period of time as medical staff treated him for a head injury. He played just two minutes in the game.

After the game, New Mexico State head coach Jason Hooten apologized to Liberty for the incident. He also expected a suspension to be announced by Conference USA soon.
“First of all, that’s not the way that we’re gonna do things here at New Mexico State University,” Hooten said. “I think everybody knows me. I think in my 31-year career and 14 as a head coach, I think everybody knows the type of person that I am. I stand for that. I’m very proud of the person that I am; and our program will never do those kinds of things.
“I think every league that I’ve been in, normally it’s usually a game suspension for a fight; and I would guess that Conference USA will get together and watch some video and see if it needs to be longer than that.”
