‘You Gotta Be KIDDING ME!’ Rockies Announcers Melt Down After Blown Call Turns Into Disaster Against the Rival Dodgers

The Colorado Rockies broadcast booth lost it when a blown call on a checked swing immediately led to a go-ahead home run for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

Rockies pitcher Victor Vodnik had Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez in a 1-2 with two outs in the ninth inning. Vodnik was just one strike away from ending the game and giving his team a 9-8 win.

With the 1-2 pitch, Vodnik through a high fastball that was way above the zone. Still, Hernandez began to swing before trying to pull back and check his swing. The crowd at Coors Field immediately cheered as fans assumed Hernandez swung and the game was over. Instead, the home plate umpire appealed to the umpire at first base, who ruled it a checked swing. As a result, the pitch was a ball and the count became 2-2.

A replay of the swing showed Hernandez’s bat clearly going past home plate.

“He just got robbed,” play-by-play announcer Drew Goodman said.

Rockies manager Bud Black immediately left the dugout to scream at the first base umpire. Making matters worse was the fact that Hernandez took the very next pitch for a three-run homer to take the lead.

As he watched the ball soar over his head, Rockies outfielder Jake Cave removed his glove and furiously yelled at the same ump at first base.

“In the air, deep right center field, and this one is gone,” Goodman said. “You gotta be kidding me! From a strikeout to a three-run homer!”
