Anderson Cooper Rips Trump’s ‘Deeply Cynical’ Effort to Sabotage Senate Negotiations
CNN’s Anderson Cooper criticized Donald Trump after the former president made it known to Republican lawmakers that he does not want them to negotiate a border security and immigration bill.
According to Punchbowl News, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) informed his Republican colleagues that Trump wants to run on the issue of immigration and is seeking to thwart legislative talks on the subject.
“Politics on this have changed,” McConnell told them in a private meeting. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him.”
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) called Trump’s demand “appalling.”
Cooper addressed the matter on Thursday’s edition of AC360.
“It’s not surprising I guess, but it’s, I mean, it’s deeply cynical,” he said during a discussion with former Vermont Governor Howard Dean.
“Anderson, Donald Trump has never given a damn about the United States of America,” Dean said. “The only thing Donald Trump gives a damn about is Donald Trump. And that is what is going on here. The trouble is when he has the power to intimidate all those people in his own party who are being jerked around so fast they have no idea which way is up or down anymore, it hurts the country.”
Republicans and conservative media have criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the border perhaps more than any other issue over the last three years.
“People are dying,” Cooper said. “A lot of people’s lives are hanging in the balance here.”
“The Republican Party cares much more about the Republican Party than they do about the United States of America,” Dean responded. “And I think people are going to figure that out. And I suspect Joe Biden is going to beat Donald Trump. And that’s why at the end of the day, Americans are patriotic.”
