Anita Sarkeesian to Colbert: Gaming Is No Longer a ‘Little Boys’ Club’
Anita Sarkeesian, one of several female game developers who have suffered harassment as part of the multifaceted culture derplosion known as #GamerGate, told Stephen Colbert Wednesday about the resistance to diversifying video games and why it was being expressed in violence toward women.
“I think women are perceived as threatening because we are asking for games to be more inclusive,” Sarkeesian said.
“We’re seeing this influx of different kind of games, and that’s what #GamerGate is responding to. They’re actually responding to the fact that gaming can no longer be this little boys’ club. There are many of us women who have been playing games our entire lives. They’re lashing out because we’re challenging the status quo of gaming as a male-dominated space.”

In-character Colbert tried to argue that the games Sarkeesian thought were objectifying women were actually about men saving the damsels in distress, and how could that be anti-feminist? “Am I supposed to let the princess die?” Colbert asked.
“Well maybe the princess shouldn’t be a damsel,” Sarkeesian said, “then she could save herself.”
