Black Trump Voters Tell CNN’s Van Jones They Have No Regrets: ‘He’s an A**hole. I Like Authenticity’
CNN’s Van Jones sat with three Black voters in Greenville, South Carolina and found none of them regretted casting their votes for President Donald Trump.
Seth Dawkins, Detra German, and Kyasia Kraft all voted for Democrats in past elections, but eventually turned their support to Trump in 2024.
Dawkins told Jones that Trump’s appeal is his “authenticity,” even if that “authenticity” is being an “asshole.”
“Part of it is he’s an asshole,” Dawkins, who previously voted for former President Joe Biden, said. “I like — I like authenticity.”
Dawkins cited the southern border and the economy as the most important issues for him, dismissing the focus on social issues as a distraction.
“For me, I like the border. I just don’t like the idea of someone coming here illegally and getting benefits that can serve my community,” he said.
In the 2016 presidential election, Trump won 8% of the Black vote. That number bumped up to 12% in 2020 and 13% in 2024.
“When people think about a Trump voter, they usually think about a white dude with like a red hat on and a pickup truck and y’all are not that at all,” Jones joked with his guests during the segment.
German, who previously voted for former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, said it was pundit Candace Owens who changed her mind on Trump. She is not, however, a fan of Trump’s teasing about a third term, which would not be constitutionally allowed.
“Third term for me, absolutely not. I think at the end of these four years, it’s time to move on,” she said.
Kraft did not support Trump in 2016, but backed him in 2020 after seeing the results of his first term in the White House.
“I was pleasantly surprised, and I was pleased with what was happening. I saw the economy getting better, I saw our relations with certain countries getting better,” she said.
Kraft dismissed concerns about third-term talk as the president simply trolling his critics.
“This is a prime example of him trolling people because people have said, ‘Oh, if he gets in the office, he’s going to be a dictator, he’s going to try to run for a third term.’ Okay, y’all think I’m going to do that, I’m going to mess with y’all,” she said.
All three voters said they would cast their ballots in Trump’s favor again after seeing his first months in office.
