Boehner on Planned Lawsuit: Obama ‘Brags’ About Flouting the Law

House Speaker John Boehner today confirmed a report saying he’s planning to sue the Obama administration on behalf of the House of Representatives over President Obama‘s use of executive actions and picking and choosing which laws to enforce. Boehner simply said he does not believe that Obama is faithfully executing the laws of this country and “brags” about taking executive actions, and that’s why he’s planning to file suit.

Republicans have criticized Obama for the past few years over executive actions that bypass the Congress, as well as enforcing laws that he likes and ignoring ones he doesn’t (not to mention Republican criticisms of how the president has unilaterally changed portions of the Affordable Care Act).

To clear up the purpose of the lawsuit, Boehner said, “This is not about impeachment, this is about his faithfully executing the laws of our country.”

One reporter asked him if this is a serious bid to go after Obama or if it’s just about exciting the conservative base in an election year. Boehner insisted it’s “about defending the institution in which we serve,” and insisted that “on behalf of the institution and our Constitution, standing up and fighting for this is in the best long-term interests of the Congress.”
