Brian Kilmeade Defends Trump Forgetting Who the President: ‘He’s Convinced’ Obama is Running the White House

Brian Kilmeade presented an improbable explanation for former President Donald Trump’s continued gaffes of saying Barack Obama is currently president and not Joe Biden.

At issue? The geriatric nature of President Biden, which Fox & Friends covers pretty extensively, as do many other media outlets. The current president is 80 years old, making him the oldest who has ever served in the nation’s highest office, evidenced daily by his stiffened gait and behavior that can sometimes look confused.

Former President Trump, who seems almost certain to be Biden’s opponent in 2024, is 77 years of age and, of late, has also been prone to gaffes. During a weekend rally, he again confused Obama for Biden, something he has done several times in public appearances.

Kilmeade noticed a trend of media figures calling out Biden’s gaffes and suggested it started with a Politico magazine piece by Jonathan Martin, which, in the Fox News host’s eyes, read that “nobody thinks he can do the job, how his staff doesn’t let him talk to the media. They don’t let him talk anything about policy. He loses his temper behind the scenes. They mock him behind the scenes. Who’s running his Irish temper? That’s what we have.”

But then he returned to an interview he did with Trump for his radio show in which Trump kept bringing up Obama and not Biden. “They say it’s gaffes. He says Obama; I corrected him on that. I said, ‘You mean Biden?’ He goes, ‘No, Obama is running this White House.’

“He’s convinced of it,” he concluded before acknowledging, “There’s no proof of that.”

Kilmeade is referencing this exchange from his radio interview:

Donald Trump: It’s all coming through Iran. And Obama wants to he doesn’t want to talk about it. He doesn’t want to mention he doesn’t even mention them in his statements. It’s all coming through Iran.

Brian Kilmeade: Well, you mean President Biden. So but right now.

Donald Trump: I also mean Obama.

Brian Kilmeade: What do you mean?

Donald Trump: You know Obama and Biden. But Obama is Biden’s boss. Guess you didn’t really know that.

Brian Kilmeade: Do you believe it? You believe President Obama.

Donald Trump: In the past? I don’t think I don’t think Biden knows what’s happening, to be honest with you. I think Obama is calling these shots, and he’s always felt this way about Iran. There’s no question about that. No, I think Obama and Obama’s people certainly are calling the shots, not Biden.

Of course, Trump might think that. But it seems entirely more likely he’d improvise a bullshit explanation to cover his gaffe, on that was bought and amplified by his vocal defender on the top-rated cable news morning show.

This is not the first time Klmeade floated this defense. He trotted out this weekend with Howard Kurtz and was immediately mocked for his pro-Trump spin by his fellow guest Leslie Marshall,  who said, “come on Brian!”
