British Pol: Bad Idea to Ban Trump, He Would Proudly Wear It as ‘Halo of Victimhood’
Two members of Parliament appeared on CNN International this afternoon to debate the prospect of banning Donald Trump, with one of them saying doing so would only give Trump another opportunity to play up his victimization status.
MP Paul Flynn argued to anchor Hala Gorani that “the best thing that could happen to him would be a ban,” because then he can wear it as a “halo of victimhood.” He completely condemned Trump’s “hateful” remarks, but said it’s a bad idea to give The Donald this kind of publicity.
On the other hand, MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh argued that the UK government has the complete right to decide to ban certain individuals if what they say id “non-conducive to the public good,” and given who they’ve banned in the past, Trump “meets that standard.”
The British Parliament debated whether to ban Trump for about three hours today. There was pretty much universal ridicule and condemnation of Trump’s remarks, but they were a little more split on whether to ban him.
Flynn said he’d like to invite Trump to the UK to show him great multicultural communities and have him point to exactly where the supposed “no-go areas are for the police.”
Ahmed-Sheikh still expressed some concerns that given what Trump has stirred up in the United States, he might “cause the same damage” if he travels across the pond.
