Chris Cuomo Covers Brother’s Election Loss on Live TV: ‘I Wanted My Brother to Win’
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo co-anchored the network’s live election night coverage on Tuesday and was on hand when the New York mayoral race was called for state Rep. Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary in June.
For obvious reasons, Chris Cuomo has largely avoided covering his brother’s mayoral campaign, but on Tuesday, he was at the center of NewsNation’s election coverage when the network and Decision Desk HQ were the first to call the race. The network’s Connell McShane delivered the news.
“Alright, Connell, what do you got for us?” Chris Cuomo asked.
“We have the call of the New York City mayor’s race at five past the hour after the polls had closed,” McShane said. “And Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist, is the winner as expected and will be the next mayor here in New York City.”
At the time, Mamdani led Andrew Cuomo 52% to 40% with 35% of the vote in. Sliwa had just eight percent.
“These are a big basket of votes,” Chris Cuomo said. “If this percentage structure stays the same, it answers the question of the mandate.”
He went on to say that he wanted Andrew to win, but that the former governor was not who the voters wanted:
And of course, I wanted my brother to win. I believe in my brother. I think he’s a tremendous operator within government. But he’s not what Democrats want right now in their party. And Democrats win in New York City… I mean, that’s the one-line analysis is, the Democrat was gonna win in New York City.
But the type of Democrat and what they want, I do believe, there’s a metaphor here as a reaction to MAGA, and this is what we’ll see in the midterms.
