Chuck Todd Argues Biden Will Want RFK Jr. on Debate Stage, Could ‘Weirdly’ Help Biden Look Better

NBC’s Chuck Todd shared a mischievous theory for the just-announced pair of presidential debates — President Joe Biden might want to let independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. debate too.

After both Biden and former President Donald Trump accepted invitations on Wednesday to debate on June 27 and September 10 (for CNN and ABC, respectively), MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell covered the news on her show with a panel of guests including Todd. But in bringing up Kennedy, who may not be eligible to debate due to not meeting certain requirements as a candidate, Todd posited that his presence could be helpful to Biden:

Todd: One point about the candidate who’s not there, Kennedy. And the interesting aspect of June versus September. So, when you read the CNN rules and the criteria carefully they clearly have a couple of caveats here, because it’s possible Kennedy does poll at 15 percent in four polls before the day. But he might not be on enough ballots to get to 270 electoral votes. So they were very careful that the way the process works, he’ll be there by the fall. I’m actually one of those — I’m in the minority in this — I think if you’ve ever spent a lot of time watching Robert Kennedy Jr. speak, I think if you’re Joe Biden, you’re going to want him on the debate stage. I think there will be a point in the fall that they will actually see that as an asset. I’m sort of in the minority on this.

Mitchell: Let’s just face it —

Todd: I think that —

Mitchell: He has a vocal issue. It’s an ailment.

Todd: And I think it will weirdly help Biden look less, you know, any of his issues come across less because I think the… I don’t think a lot of people realize this about Robert F. Kennedy Jr. And I, I think it’ll be interesting. But if he’s on the… I’m not ruling out the possibility he makes it to the second debate.
