Chuck Todd Calls Out Trump, GOP Hypocrisy on National Emergency: ‘I Guess the Oval Office Really Does Change People’
On Friday, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd called out Republicans for their hypocrisy when it comes to President Donald Trump‘s national security executive action.
“Tonight I’m obsessed with evolution — political evolution,” Todd began. “And on the issue of the Constitution and presidential authority. Boy, have some Republicans evolved.”
He then noted just four years ago Vice President Mike Pence seemed to have a “very strong opinion” on presidents using their power to go around Congress.
Todd then played a clip of Pence saying he does not believe “presidents using their power to go around Congress,” before noting that, of course, that was during the Obama administration.
He next played a second clip of Pence’s opinion when the president was Trump.
“The president of the United States has the absolute authority under the Constitution and by statute to declare a national emergency and reposition resources,” Pence is heard saying, contradicting his own previous statement.
Todd then noted that Sen. Mitch McConnell did the same thing.
Four years ago, McConnell said this about Obama: “[The president’s action] would ignore the law, would reject the voice of the voters.”
Then, McConnell on Trump: “I’m going to support the national emergency declaration.”
Todd wasn’t done. He noted Cruz wrote a lengthy op-ed blasting Obama but when it comes to Trump’s executive action, “crickets, zilch, zippo, nothing.”
Finally after noting Trump himself “has evolved,” he concluded, “Gee, I guess the Oval Office really does change people.”
