CNN’s Data Guru Says It’s ‘Really Hard to Find Any’ Support for Trump Tariffs: Could End Up ‘Ending His Presidency’
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten declared on Thursday that it’s “really hard” to find any support for President Donald Trump’s tariffs in polling.
Trump introduced major tariffs on imports from a number of countries on Wednesday, which he christened “Liberation Day.” The president has argued these tariffs will lead to better trade deals and a boost in American manufacturing, but they’ve faced some bipartisan backlash. Following Trump’s announcement, the stock market took a major hit on Thursday morning, sparking more concerns among critics.
Enten broke down the minimal public support for Trump’s tariffs on Thursday morning following an appearance by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on the network to defend them and knock the “naysayer” critics. The “naysayers,” Enten said, is the majority of Americans.
“The naysayers are the majority of the American public,” Enten reported, citing a CBS News/YouGov poll showing 56% of people oppose new tariffs on all goods from other countries, including foreign cars and auto parts.
Enten added that he looked at a “ton of polling” and it’s “really hard to find any” support for Trump’s tariffs war, though he noted support generally ticks up when people are asked about tariffs against China specifically.
“I looked at a ton of polling. It’s really hard to find any in which you find folks supporting new tariffs, maybe against China, but against all our other countries, especially our allies. No, no, no. Oppose, oppose, oppose,” Enten said.
In the same CBS/YouGov poll, 72% said they believe tariffs will raise costs at least in the short term and 64% of Republicans agreed with that. Enten also noted that tariffs listed dead last in a list of eight priorities for the president, with the economy and inflation ranking first on the list.
Enten argued Trump is taking a risk so major that could “end up ending his presidency.”
“Americans want, simply put, nothing to do with it, yet Trump decides to keep pushing forward,” Enten said.
“Right or wrong, I think it is safe to say this is a huge political risk he is taking,” CNN anchor John Berman said.
“100%. this could be a risk that ends up ending his presidency,” Enten replied.
