CNN’s Gloria Borger Trashes ‘Rude’ Republicans Snubbing Ketanji Brown Jackson After Confirmation Vote: ‘This is a Moment in History!’
CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger scolded the “rude” Republicans who chose to walk out of the U.S. Senate chamber without clapping for Ketanji Brown Jackson’s ascension to the Supreme Court.
Borger was on CNN Newsroom with her colleagues on Thursday to react to the Senate’s 53-47 vote confirming Jackson as America’s first African American woman to the Supreme Court. The vote was met with a standing ovation from the Democrats in the Chamber, while several Republican lawmakers were seen walking out in the middle of the applause.
As Borger spoke about how only 3 Republicans broke party ranks to vote in favor of Jackson, she disdainfully turned her attention to the Republicans who “could not leave that chamber quickly enough. And I think it was rude!”
She proceeded to call out Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who seemed to be late for the vote, and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who reportedly voted from the cloakroom because he wasn’t wearing a tie.
I think it was rude that Rand Paul was late. Maybe he had a late flight, so we’ll give him that excuse. But I mean…Ali Zaslov and our Hill team is reporting that Lindsey Graham wasn’t wearing the required tie, so he had to vote from outside the chamber in the cloakroom. Okay. But this is a moment in history, and you ought to show up! Whether you agree with the outcome or not, you need to pay this woman the respect that she is due! And you need to do that for any Supreme Court nominee.
Borger went on by referring to recent polls showing Jackson has been well received by the public.
“I think the public was against those people who decided they couldn’t stay in that chamber,” she said. “This may boomerang for them. But at the very least, even if you disagree with the result, you can honor her achievement, and they couldn’t stay to do that.”
