Congressman Says ‘We Had Wagers Going’ on When Trump-Musk Bromance Would Implode

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) said lawmakers “had wagers going” on the House floor as to when the relationship between President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk would implode.

Thursday was a whirlwind news day as the two former allies sniped at each other on social media.

Trouble began this week when Musk opposed Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” that is currently being considered by the Senate. Musk called the legislation “a disgusting abomination.” In a social media post on Thursday, the president said Musk was “wearing thin” and said he asked the Tesla CEO to leave the government and that Musk “went CRAZY.” Musk also called for Trump’s impeachment and said the president is in deceased child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s files.

Moreover, Trump threatened to cancel federal contracts with Musk’s SpaceX, whose headquarters are in Gonzalez’s district.

After the Trump-Musk feud dissipated on Thursday evening, Gonzalez appeared on CNN’s The Source, where Kaitlan Collins asked him about the potential ramifications of SpaceX losing federal contracts.

“So what happens if the president follows through on his threat to terminate Elon’s federal contracts?” the host asked.

“Well, obviously, that would be devastating for SpaceX and obviously many other programs that Musk is running,” Gonzalez responded. “I don’t think you need to be a genius, though, to foresee that this eruptive and public display of divorce was gonna happen at some point. I mean, we had wagers going on on the floor. ‘Is this relationship gonna last three months? Is it gonna last six months?’ I don’t think anyone thought it was gonna last a year.”

The congressman went on to credit Musk for opposing the spending bill, albeit for different reasons. Musk has slammed the legislation because the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates it will increase deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years. Gonzalez, meanwhile, has objected to the massive Medicaid cuts in the bill, which also extends the 2017 tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term. Those cuts are set to expire at the end of the year.
