CNN, NBC Hosts Reportedly on Short List to Replace Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek

Alex Trebek, who has been hosting Jeopardy for more than 30 years, just extended his contract through the 2017-2018 season. But in an article for CNN Money this week, Brian Stelter speculated that the 74-year-old couldn’t possible hold on to the gig much longer after that.

The Reliable Sources host revealed the “mental, if not official, short list of potential successors” that executives for the show have in mind, including CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Today show host Matt Lauer. Of course, both men have prominent media gigs of their own, but could perhaps be looking for more relaxed positions down the road.

Cooper is a frequent Celebrity Jeopardy contestant, though he once had the unfortunate experience of losing to one half of Cheech and Chong. He has since displayed his game show hosting ability on CNN’s Presidents’ Day Quiz Show experiment. It may be important to note that Wolf Blitzer, who once came in third place behind Andy Richter and Dana Delany, is not on the list.

Also on the short list are radio host Dan Patrick, who hosts the Sports Jeopardy web series for Crackle and Josh Elliott, the former Good Morning America anchor who was wooed away to join NBC Sports and is considered a possible successor to Matt Lauer.

It’s certainly hard to imagine Jeopardy without Alex Trebek, but after a show like the one he hosted last night, he just might be ready to call it a day.
