Dan Goldman Savages ‘Hack’ Alina Habba for Prosecuting Colleague: ‘This Is Such Trash’
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) had harsh words for Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba over her prosecution of Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ).
On Monday, Habba announced she is prosecuting McIver in connection with the lawmaker’s visit to an ICE detention facility in Newark this month, accusing McIver of “assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement. McIver and Reps. Rob Menendez (D-NJ) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) toured the facility as part of their congressional oversight authority. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was also there and was arrested that day. Habba, who reveled in Baraka’s arrest the day it happened, announced she is dropping the charges against the mayor.
Goldman, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, appeared on Tuesday’s edition of The Weeknight on MSNBC, where co-host Symone Sanders accused the Trump administration of a series of escalations regarding the politicians’ visit to the ICE facility.
“And they’re escalating the situation yet again on a sitting member of Congress,” she said. “What are Democrats gonna do?”
“Well, there are a couple of things that certainly we will do, which is why I’m here,” Goldman replied. “We’re talking about it, calling out why this is such trash, and this is absolutely improper and unacceptable. What I find to be interesting is within 30 days, a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s office in New Jersey is gonna have to go to the grand jury and present evidence and ask a grand jury to file an indictment.”
The congressman went on to say that despite Habba’s claim to have indicted McIver, the prosecutor had not actually secured one.
“I want to know what prosecutor is actually going to put his or her name on that indictment,” he continued. “And I want to see if, like what we saw in the Southern District of New York, where there was just a parade of resignations when they were asked to do something that was so clearly political and so clearly contrary to their oath of office. Alina Habba doesn’t care. She’s a hack. She doesn’t even know how to introduce
evidence into court during a trial. And yet she’s the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey. She’ll say anything. She’ll do anything.”
