‘Embarrassing’: Former Trump White House Lawyer Roasts Alina Habba’s ‘Minor League’ Performance in Court
A former attorney who served in Donald Trump’s White House panned the former president’s attorney, who repeatedly ran afoul of a federal judge on Wednesday.
Alina Habba had quite a time in Judge Lewis Kaplan’s courtroom, where a jury will weigh how much to award writer E. Jean Carroll in her defamation case against Trump. Last year, the jury found Trump liable for sexually assaulting Carroll in the mid-1990s and subsequently defaming her.
At one point, Habba asked for the court to adjourn so Trump – who is not required to be present because it is a civil proceeding – could attend his late mother-in-law’s funeral scheduled for Thursday.
“The application is denied,” Kaplan told Habba. “I will hear no further argument on it.” Habba continued speaking.
“None,” he said. “Do you understand that word? Sit down.”
“I don’t like to be spoken to that way, your honor,” Habba replied.
“It’s denied,” he reiterated. “Sit down.”
On Wednesday’s edition of CNN’s OutFront, Erin Burnett discussed the proceedings with Ty Cobb, who served as an attorney in Trump’s White House.
“I think his frustration with Trump is understandable, but I think he’s actually probably equally if not more frustrated with Trump’s lawyers who did some shocking things in the courtroom today,” Cobb said.
“Well, his lawyer Alina Habba, she violated all the rules,” Burnett interjected. “Again and again they were violated.”
“That, and responding to him at one point saying I don’t like to be talked to that way,” Cobb said while incredulously chuckling. “Plus, then she did a very you know, sort of minor league job of trying to introduce some evidence, and the judge was very patient with her. He gave her sort of two recesses or two opportunities to try to guide her through it himself, called a halt, and took a break with the hope that one of her colleagues could help her figure out how to do what it was that she intended. It was really sort of, you know, embarrassing.”
After emerging from the courtroom on Wednesday, Trump told reporters Kaplan is “a nasty judge.”
