‘Exhausted’ Lawrence O’Donnell Declares He’s Taking a Break From Trump After Feeling Like First 50 Days in WH Were 100: His ‘Brain Does Not Work!’

An “exhausted” Lawrence O’Donnell announced on Wednesday that he’s taking a short break from covering President Donald Trump.

O’Donnell told colleague Rachel Maddow that he’s taking next week off while Maddow was closing out her show and bringing in O’Donnell for The Last Word. O’Donnell said he’s “exhausted” and felt as though day 52 of Trump’s administration was actually “day 92.”

“I’m exhausted at day 52, and so I’m going to take next week off. And I’m telling you that now because I know you don’t like it when I just drift away. I’m just taking next week off, then I’m going to come back and go with you all the way to the 100 days,” he told Maddow.

After O’Donnell said he was taking his much-needed break, he launched into a rant about Trump in which he claimed the president’s “brain does not work.”

O’Donnell called out Republicans for not condemning Trump saying on Wednesday at the White House that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is “not Jewish anymore.” The president referred to Schumer as “Palestinian” amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Any other president making such a statement, O’Donnell argued, would be “rushed to the hospital for a neurological examination.”

O’Donnell said:

And so America is at this hour completing the 52nd day of having a president of the United States whose brain does not work. Donald Trump’s brain is broken, badly damaged, as he exhibits every day. And once again today Donald Trump said something that would have gotten any other president rushed to the hospital for a neurological examination and an evaluation for dementia, for starters. That’s where they would have begun. It was a vile, anti-Semitic outburst.

Check out the O’Donnell and Maddow exchange below:

LAWRENCE O’DONNELL: I know you’ve pledged to cover and be here for the first 100 days of the Trump presidency. I hope you noticed that I did not make that same pledge when you did.

RACHEL MADDOW: You’re not going anywhere, are you?

O’DONNELL: Well, here’s the thing. This is day 52. I thought it was day 92. It turns out it’s day 52, Rachel. And I’m exhausted at day 52, and so I’m going to take next week off. And I’m telling you that now because I know you don’t like it when I just drift away. I’m just taking next week off, then I’m going to come back and go with you all the way to the 100 days.

MADDOW: I know we all tell each other, you have to take care of yourself, you got to pace yourself, you got to be in this for the long haul, so I can’t hold it against you. But I’m very sad.

O’DONNELL: Can you hold this against me? I’m going to get a head start by taking tomorrow off.

MADDOW: Yes!

O’DONNELL: Yeah, I thought you might!

MADDOW: I’m getting — I’m pre-mad right now. It’s like — and it’s not even tomorrow yet. Take me with you. Can I go with you? Where are you going? Don’t tell me where you’re going.

O’DONNELL: No, no, no. You said 100 days, you said 100 days. You can’t. You said 100 days. On the 101st day, Rachel, you and I, we’re—

MADDOW: Poof.

O’DONNELL: Yeah, right! Happy day 52, Rachel.
