‘F*ck That Noise’: Colbert Celebrates Never Having to Watch Bill O’Reilly Again

As he heads into his final few shows, Stephen Colbert retired another long-running recurring segment last night with “Formidable Opponent.” Just as he did during the first month of The Colbert Report back in 2005, Colbert held a debate with himself about the moral and legal questions surrounding torture of detainees.

The segment served as an opportunity for the real, blue-tied Stephen Colbert to start saying goodbye to the fictional, mirror-image red-tied “Stephen Colbert,” who passionately argued in favor of torture, despite the Senate Intelligence Committee report’s evidence that it was ineffective and inhumane. The most telling moment came when red-Colbert used the words of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly to back up his point.

“Oh, I am going to miss that good man,” blue-Colbert said. When his counterpart pointed out that O’Reilly will not be retiring at the end of this week, the real Colbert replied, “Yeah, but no one’s going to pay me to watch him anymore, so fuck that noise!”

By the end of the segment, instead of saying the final line in unison with himself, the real Colbert accused his mirror-image of being an “imaginary Stephen Colbert” and said, “You sir, have been a formidable opponent,” as the red-tied Colbert character poignantly faded into the background.
