Fox & Friends Defends Chris Sununu’s Pledge to Support Trump Despite Calling Him an ‘Insurrectionist’

Fox & Friends rushed to defend New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. On Sunday, his battle with George Stephanopoulos over his pledge to support former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election went viral, given his admission that Trump contributed to an insurrection.

Sununu played a visible role in the GOP primary as the lead surrogate in support of former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. As such, he was a vocal critic of Trump, going so far as condemning his role in the January 6th storming of the Capitol, as NHPR reported at the time:

In a statement, Sununu said “President Trump’s rhetoric and actions contributed to the insurrection at the United States Capitol Building.”

Sununu also said that what he called the “domestic terrorists” who participated in the attack should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The governor declined, however to call for Trump’s impeachment, noting that “President-Elect Biden has said impeachment is a matter for Congress to weigh, and I agree.”

During Sunday’s appearance on ABC’s This Week, Stephanopoulos not only confronted the NH Governor but was openly gobsmacked over how he could support an individual who was part of an insurrection against the United States. Enter the conservative morning show Fox & Friends to explain why Sununu was correct.

The show aired a brief segment of the interview, which concluded:

Stephanopoulos: That doesn’t make any sense to me. Governor. I’m sorry you’re saying it’s not about Trump. You’re saying he would be the president and you’ve said he’s someone who’s contributed to an insurrection.

Sununu: I understand it doesn’t make sense to you, George, but look at the polls.

The hosts each latched on to Sununu’s comment to the ABC News anchor that the “New York Bubble” is clouding his view on Trump, suggesting the issue is about American pro-Trump support and not the disconnect between condemning Trump’s role in what he saw as an insurrection and his willingness to support the same candidate now.
