Fox News Anchor Julie Banderas Calls For ‘Common Sense’ Gun Control: Do Americans ‘Need an Assault Weapon?’
Fox News anchor Julie Banderas took a “common sense second” to address the issue of lacking background checks when it comes to firearm sales in America, asking her network’s typically pro-Second Amendment audience, “Does america need an assault weapon to protect itself?”
In the wake of the Parkland, Florida school shooting that resulted in the death of 17 people, many programs on Fox News have opted to attack calls for gun control and even bring on spokespeople for the NRA for softball interviews. However, Banderas drifted from the script in her Sunday night segment on the issue, saying:
“I’d like to take a timeout now for a common sense second: Of course, owning a gun is the right of every US citizen, but it is the responsibility of lawmakers to prevent those who don’t deserve the right from acquiring one. It’s not an infringement on the Second Amendment to stop arming the mentally ill, but some will argue, ‘How do you plan to determine who is mentally ill?’ Well, this goes well beyond mental health — background checks should include criminal records and any history of violence and drug abuse, and why not require training?”
Banderas went on to compare America’s gun laws to Israel’s, as the Middle Eastern country “requires gun owners to doctors note proving no mental illness or history of drug abuse, you also must demonstrate that you can use a gun and a firing range before taking it home with a limited supply of bullets.”
“A correctly aimed bullet does exactly what it needs to do — there doesn’t need to be 30. Does an American need an assault weapon to protect themselves, target shoot, or provide food for the family?” She added.
The anchor finished the segment by suggesting US citizens, “just like the law-enforcement and military get proper training,” should recieve proper firearm training before owning weapons. “Owning a gun is is a right, but it’s our responsibility as Americans to carry one responsibly,” Banderas concluded.
