Fox News Host Says He Doesn’t Understand Why Obama Didn’t Endorse Black Republican: ‘I Can’t Square This’
Fox News’s Charlie Hurt said he “can’t square” why former Democratic President Barack Obama did not endorse the Black Republican nominee for governor of Virginia in Tuesday’s election.
Obama has been campaigning for former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) in her race against Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (R) to succeed Governor Glenn Youngkin (R), who is term-limited.
Recent polling shows Earle-Sears trailing by double digits.
The former president routinely endorses candidates who are fellow Democrats. But while appearing on Monday’s edition of The Ingraham Angle, Earle-Sears and guest host Hurt expressed puzzlement at why Obama would not endorse her, a Republican who is the first Black woman to be elected to statewide office in Virginia.
Earle-Sears noted the former president’s endorsement last year of then-Vice President Kamala Harris, a Black Democrat, for president.
“And then of course, last year this time, he told everybody to vote for the Black woman,” she said. “Well, Charlie, here I am. Here I am, and now he’s singing a different tune. Hypocrisy all the way.”
“You know, you raise a really important point,” Hurt assented. “And I really, honestly do not understand it, because we did go through years of lectures about how important it was to vote for Barack Obama to be this historic first Black candidate. And afterwards, we were told that this was the greatest thing, and it was gonna solve all these problems.”
Hurt went on to say that polling showed that race relations in the U.S. “deteriorated” during the Obama administration. He then dinged the former president for not endorsing the lieutenant governor.
“And then for him to have the opportunity to help out the first Black female governor [sic] – by the way, of a state that elected the first Black governor in the United States – explain to me, what are we missing? How does– I can’t square this.”
“Yeah, you can’t square it because it doesn’t make any sense,” Earle-Sears replied, seemingly perplexed as to why Obama did not endorse a Republican because of her skin color. “I told you, these people are for nonsense.”
