Fox News Reporter Shuts Down Greg Gutfeld For Saying Mattis Quit Because He’s Tired: ‘He Has Been in War’

In a stunning announcement on Thursday evening, President Donald Trump said Defense Secretary James Mattis will be retiring in February.

Fox News reported that the shock move came after Trump announced the U.S. would be withdrawing troops from Syria, against the wishes of Mattis, the Pentagon and the State Department.

Greg Gutfeld, opining on Fox News show The Five, had a theory on the firing that had little to do with the gaping disagreements between Mattis and Trump.

“I think a lot of this has to do with Trump’s work style,” Gutfeld explained. “Trump is extremely exhausting, right? Two years working for Trump is probably eight years for normal people. I’ve worked in a company, and I know that there are certain types of boss styles that are jarring.”

“This is a guy that was retired, that came back in and in two years achieved quite a lot,” Gutfeld continued. “If you look at ISIS, if you look at the rebuilt military, if you look at China, North Korea. He accomplished a hell of a lot in two years. But it’s exhausting — maybe it’s just like, ‘Hey, I’ve had a good ride, I don’t need this.'”

“Well I must say that’s not exactly the Secretary Mattis that I know,” replied Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin. “And from those who work very closely with him, he is not somebody who gets tired. He spends very little time sleeping. He has been in war. He has led Marines in combat. He’s not exhausted. But he does, and you see it in this letter of resignation and announcing his retirement, he says that he’s not aligned with many of the president’s policies.”
