Fox’s Brit Hume Pumps the Brakes on Trump’s Hopes for Imminent End to Ukraine War: ‘Final Deal’ Is ‘Some Considerable Ways Off’
Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume said President Donald Trump’s hopes for a quick end to Russia’s war in Ukraine are a bit off the mark.
On Monday, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders to discuss the war, which began in February 2022. The U.S. and several European countries have supplied the besieged country with a steady stream of weapons to fight off the invasion. The gathering came just three days after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Trump said he aims to host a meeting between the two adversaries.
During a meeting on Monday, Trump was caught on a hot mic saying that Putin wants to deal.
“I think he wants to make a deal with me,” Trump told an attendee. “I don’t understand that, as crazy as it sounds.”
Hours later on Monday’s Special Report on Fox News, Hume threw cold water on the idea, at least for now.
“What we heard today, publicly, sounded like it was heading in the right direction,” Bret Baier said.
“Well, it certainly was an impressive display, Bret,” Hume replied. “Perhaps even a historic display of U.S.-European unity, at least in the modern age, at least in these recent years, when there’s been so much tension between President Trump, in particular, and European leaders. Today, they were all united, sitting around the table, praising him and talking about their optimism for peace.”
Hume went on to say that while there is reason for some optimism, it should be tempered by the latest rumblings out of the Kremlin.
“But we also had a response from Russia today to the idea of some kind of NATO-like peacekeeping force with European nations in it in Ukraine,” he continued. “And they say they explicitly reject that and always have… They would have to give some real ground there in order to change Russia’s mind about that. And I think it suggests that the path toward a final deal here may be some considerable ways off, as much as the president, who always likes to have things done quickly, as we hear him say, would like this to happen on a fast track.”
