Fox’s Larry Kudlow Stuns Harris Faulkner When He Accuses Texas of ‘Racial Gerrymandering’

Fox Business host Larry Kudlow accused Texas Republicans of trying to redistrict the state’s congressional map in a way that would disempower racial minorities in the state.

It was a view that surprised co-host Harris Faulkner.

On Sunday, several Democratic lawmakers in Texas fled the state for Illinois to deprive the Republican majority of a quorum, making it impossible for the GOP to enact its rare mid-decade redistricting plan that would create five districts favorable to Republicans and potentially result in the ousting of that many congressional Democrats.

Texas Republicans’ proposal is supported by President Donald Trump.

On Monday’s Outnumbered on Fox News, the co-hosts discussed the situation, with Kudlow noting that last month, the Department of Justice warned Texas that four of its current districts are unconstitutional because the state considered race when drawing the map. Texas Republicans deny the allegation.

“There’s issues here,” Kudlow said. “This is about the Voting Rights Act, and this is about the Equal Protection Clause. There’s gonna be an argument here all across the country. It’s not just Texas, and it’s not just Texas Democrats. The Justice Department is saying that this was a racial, a racial district gerrymandering that was done earlier, and needed to be overturned.”

As Kudlow sounded an increasingly skeptical tone about Texas’s redistricting, Faulkner appeared stunned and interrupted him.

“So you’re saying that this shouldn’t happen?!” she asked.

“I’m saying that the Justice Department is saying to Texas, ‘You’re gonna have to redo your districts because you’re doing racial gerrymandering.” And I agree with that. How it comes out, let them fight it out. And it’s stupid for [Texas Democratic lawmakers] to go to Illinois, but there is a serious issue here. And you’re gonna see it, probably, in 10 or 12 states across the country.”

“You’re gonna see it in California next,” Faulkner replied, referring to Governor Gavin Newsom’s threat to redistrict the state’s congressional maps more favorably for Democrats if Texas follows through.
