Gohmert Blames ‘the Left’ for Twisting Welfare Comments: ‘Thank God for Fox’
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) appeared on Fox & Friends on Thursday where he attacked “the left” and various left-leaning news outlets for what he said was an effort to misrepresent comments he made on the House floor about single mothers and rampant welfare fraud among young women. Gohmert told Fox host Brian Kilmeade “thank God for Fox News” for correcting the record.
“We’re seeing more and more young women, single women coming before me, single moms, charged with welfare fraud,” Gohmert said on the House floor recently.
Gohmert told Kilmeade that his comments were misconstrued. “The left tried to say I was attacking single moms,” he said. Gohmert said that he was reflecting on the problem of young women dropping out of high school with the intention of having children and collecting welfare as a means of support.
“What got me is, for so many young women, the government – meaning well – lured them into a hole or rut they couldn’t get out of,” Gohmert said.
Kilmeade featured a post on MSNBC.com which accused Gohmert and the GOP of blaming single moms for poverty.
