House Democrat Calls Out Fellow Party Members Following SOTU for Not Recognizing ‘Importance of Coming Together’

A House Democrat called out fellow party members for their criticism of Joe Biden following the president’s State of the Union address.

Appearing on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom on Thursday, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) was asked about Democrats, including Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Cori Bush (D-MO), who responded to Biden’s speech. Tlaib gave a response on behalf of the Working Families Party.

Bush hit at Biden’s call during his speech for funding law enforcement.

“With all due respect, Mr. President. You didn’t mention saving Black lives once in this speech. All our country has done is given more funding to police. The result? 2021 set a record for fatal police shootings. Defund the police. Invest in our communities,” she tweeted.

In response to Tlaib’s upcoming speech, Gottehimer said to Axios, “It’s like keying your own car and slashing your own tires.”

“How would you rate the sense of bond perhaps in the Democratic Party now,” asked America’s Newsroom co-host Bill Hemmer.

Gottheimer responded:

There’s just some folks in the party who don’t recognize the importance of coming together and having a big tent party and criticizing the president or criticizing others in the party. I think it’s really important that, frankly, right now Democrats and Republicans come together and stand strong whether that’s standing up to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin or, as the president talked about, on bipartisan issues where we can find common ground, of course, like standing by law enforcement and against crime and making sure that we invest, not defund, which I think you saw strong bipartisan support for.

He has the unity agenda that he talked about on opioids, and cancer and mental health issues. I think we all agree that we must work together to deal with rising prices in gasoline and groceries and utility bills. I believe deeply that we need tax cuts and more affordability overall.

You saw a great moment where people were taking off masks and finally as we get past the height of the pandemic here, getting back to life, people back to work, keeping our kids in school. These are all things I hear about at home that people say to me, like we got to get done and deal with and so that’s what I think we need to all focus on.
